FROM THE BAHAMAS TO MINNESOTA TO MACON, GEORGIA

St. Joseph Church in Macon is blessed to have a seminarian with us from now through August. His name is Avery Hanna. He is from the Bahamas, but did his undergraduate work at the Benedictine run, St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. He finished there in 1993 and went on to earn a masters in education administration in St. Paul, Minnesota and finally ended up in Columbus, Georgia as the principal of Pacelli Catholic High School. Columbus is in the Diocese of Savannah.

It was from there that he discerned his second vocation. He is studying at Blessed John XXIII in Weston, Mass, a suburb of Boston. This seminary is specifically designed for older men. He's completed two years of theology. He'll return in the fall to begin his third year.

The Benedictines from Collegeville have a ministry in the Bahamas and a goodly number of men from there go to their university in Collegeville.

Avery told me that he experienced 50 degrees below zero weather up there. That's downright ungodly! I'm sure he's glad to be in Macon and just a bit closer to the Bahamas.
